Race weekend is over and done with. One traffic fatality was reported following the race, in the early morning hours on Monday. It appears that this had less to do with the race and more to do with the rainy weather.
A 23-year-old Chatom, Ala. woman named Lashawna Renee Jones, was killed and two others were injured when their vehicle left I-20 and hit a tree as they were headed eastbound at about the 170 mile marker on I-20. Candice Richardson, 21, and Austin Hall, 1, both of Deer Park, were taken to RMC.
Piedmont police also sent word that they busted a man on the 1000 block of Mack Alexander Road for making meth. DHR apparently asked police to search the house after they learned children lived at the residence.
Finally, last night was the third in a series of Stop the Violence meetings hosted by Anniston Funeral Services. The ideas were flowing and so was some criticism. Though the discussion was very civil, the group seems to be metaphorically edging their way through a packed church pew trying to get to their seat while not stepping on too many toes.
I'm working on a couple of stories hoping to explore more about the problems affecting violence instead of the symptoms.
Here are some of the past stories on the Stop the Violence campaign.
There is an unrelated anti-violence rally this weekend at Zinn Park beginning at 10 a.m.

can you give us any insight to the rumors going around town regarding a serial rapist. if this is true APD need to inform the women and young ladies in the community so that they can take proper precautions.
thanks
Sure. As I understand it - and I don't believe I am compromising any investigations here - "serial rapist" doesn't quite fit the situation just yet.
I have heard the rumor too, and have made an effort to encourage investigators to share their thoughts about it.
Suffice to say there is not enough information to link any incidents together. There have been incidents over the last two years, and they have generally occurred east of Noble Street. Investigators haven't released which ones, if any, they think are similar enough to be related.
I'm trying to gather together some of the incidents on my own using this blog - we have reported on all of them. But realistically there are some bits of information investigators know that they can't share.
There have been a number of burglary/rape incidents in that area in two years, including the high profile one at The Victoria Inn.
It doesn't appear that the most recent home invasion was related to the others - which tend to involve one man.
Investigators' advice so far is to do nothing more than normal. Lock the doors, be aware of your surroundings especially when you're coming home.
I will continue to ask about this. Let me know what you heard and we'll try to start fleshing this out piece by piece.
i went into a business this week and was told by the employees there that an anniston investigater had asked them to pass the word along to all women encouraging them to be very cautious in the anniston area. the investigater told them that the suspect in question was stalking women and following them to their home and them raping them. i can tell by this blog that crime in the anniston area is at an all time high and this concerned me since i work in this area. any information that you can share with us will be very helpful.
That's very interesting, and from the shreds of info I know, it seems to be consistent. If you recall, we reported on an incident on Blue Ridge where a man was waiting outside for a young woman to come home. He pushed her inside.
April 1 incident on the 700 block of Blue Ridge Drive in which a 21-year-old victim was raped and robbed in the early morning hours.
Blue Ridge incident
Here's another one in the area from a while back. No idea if this is related.
Still it involves the same area.
thanks for the information. i was just curious if this is the truth or just a way of scaring women. any information you could forward on would be good.
well i see the guy has struck again. i will be glad when they catch him and all the anniston residents can rest once again. whats the latest you have heard.
I think it is the same man. The victims give the description of the same man a black man with a thin build and very tall and generally wearing a mask. It has to be someone who is jobless homeless Or umemployed oron disability amd maybe lives in their car or van and has time to sit and watch or follow women all the time. I don't think someone with a family and a job and works all the time (full time) would have thw time time to sit and watch and follow people all the time.
